The executive director of ENNY Foundation, Emmanuel Ntow Nyarko, has trained parents and teachers of the Royal Streams Montessori at Airport Residential Area in Accra on ‘the red flags of autism’. The training formed part of ENNY Foundation’s social responsibility programme.
Mr. Nyarko explained that Autism impairs a child’s speech, communication, social and play skills. He encouraged parents not to panic when they see some signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in their wards but rather seek the help of a professional for proper diagnosis and early intervention.
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental condition that impairs the ability to communicate and interact with others.
“No two children with ASD are the same”, he said. “This means that even if two children are diagnosed with Level 2, they present different symptoms.”
Mr. Nyarko called for further engagement with the school authorities. He suggested that as part of the school’s inclusive educational programmes, management should consider establishing a department solely to provide early intervention for pupils with ASD.
